Stephanie Evans received her Bachelors of Fine Art in Ceramics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts in 2003.
Following graduation, Evans was awarded a residency at the Peninsula School of Art in Fish Creek, WI. During that time she continued to pursue her interest in figurative ceramic sculpture. After completing the residency, Evans made Northeast Wisconsin her permanent home and currently lives and creates her work in Sister Bay, Wisconsin. Evans has exhibited her work at Fine Line Designs in Ephraim, WI, as well as the Center for the Visual Arts in Wausau, WI, the Schauer Arts Center in Hartland,WI, the Leedy Voulkos Gallery in Kansas City, MO, the Francis Hardy Gallery in Ephraim, WI as well as the Peninsula School of Art in Fish Creek, WI. Evans' protagonist is the dress form. She utilizes it as a vessel for the adornments she places inside and outside the ceramic sculpture. These objects, reliefs, and textures tell stories of an imagined wearer's deep personal thoughts and desires. The symbolism that exists in those adornments reflect the complex identity cravings of Evans' imagined characters. All of Evans' dresses are hand built using the coil method. No molds are used, giving each dress it's own individual gesture and form. The rich surfaces of each dress are achieved by layering slips, underglazes, paint, and wood stains. |
